Abstract

Property dualism is the thesis according to which there are two essentially different types of properties in the world. On the one side, there are bodies and brains, explainable and constituted by physical properties. On the other side, there is the mind, specifically consciousness, that can be fully explained only if we appeal to mental properties irreducible to the physical, or phenomenal properties. The aim of this article is to elucidate and defend property dualism. For that, I present and discuss some theses associated with it, its problems and I argue for property dualism by defending the knowledge argument against some opposing objections.

Daniel Borgoni, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR)

Doutor em filosofia pela Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), feito com auxílio da CAPES. Durante o doutorado, foi pesquisador visitante na Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) com bolsa canadense do programa ELAP. Foi pesquisador de pós-doutorado na Universidade de São Paulo (USP), trabalhando o problema da conciliação das alucinações com a visão relacional da percepção. Também tem contribuído para a educação e o pensamento crítico por meio de artigos em revistas voltadas para o público não acadêmico. Atualmente faz doutorado na Université du Québec à Trois-Riviéres (UQTR) com bolsa Universalis Causa, cuja pesquisa trata do monismo neutro numa perspectiva contemporânea. Tem experiência em filosofia com ênfase em epistemologia e metafisica na tradição analítica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: filosofia da percepção e filosofia da mente.
